Volunteer Opportunities

For those who are seeking the ultimate in railroad experience the Friends of the Valley Railroad has just what you're looking for!

If restoring vintage Railroad cars, working on locomotives (both diesel and steam), and rebuilding long-dormant track sounds appealing to you, then come see what the Friends are all about. As a not-for-profit organization devoted to promoting awareness and appreciation of the golden age of railroads through preservation, education, and participation, the Friends volunteers ply their crafts on the grounds of Connecticut's Mecca of Steam, the ever-popular Valley Railroad Company in Essex, home of the Essex Steam Train. Help preserve the past for enjoyment today, and the future!

FVRR Members can find an online community (message boards, photos, files, and more) online at your Yahoogroup: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/FVRR/

Volunteer Opportunities and Activities for 2007

We are currently looking to expand our ranks of volunteers to help with our many projects. Most of our work requires only one skill: enthusiasm! Here are some of our volunteer opportunities:

  • Tree cutting and brush clearing: Help us finish our Valley Line clearing project this fall and winter
  • Track Restoration: Have you ever wanted to know how track is built and maintained? The Saturday Track Gang could be for you!
  • Caboose Host: One weekend a month during operating season, we need friendly people to spend the day riding in the FVRR Ralph Gibson Caboose, entertaining riders in our fundraiser. No experience necessary, we will train (pun intended!)
  • Restoration projects: Help a vintage 1940's PS-1 Boxcar go from rust to restoration
  • Wednesday night 'Shop Night": Volunteers work on Wednesday nights on projects such as the Pfizer Locomotive, Caboose Maintenance and more!
  • Equipment maintenance: Various projects come up during the year requiring “elbow grease”
  • Developing new ways to display donated items
  • Goodspeed Yard Office: Grounds work and landscaping ground the preserved 1871 Chester (CT) depot, rescued and relocated to Goodspeed Yard in Haddam. Interior construction of walls, flooring, electrical wiring. The finishing touches on a true Connecticut gem!
  • Web site administration: Help us build, update and maintain a website dedicated to the FVRR
  • Much more!!
